For many Entrepreneurs, Startups and SMEs, the focus when they get started is to sell and make profit. What many fail to realize is that without a strong Brand Strategy, you risk playing a game of hit and miss. Think about it this way: as a business, you are aiming for a specific target; Brand Strategy gives you a sniper instead of a machine gun. You are much more likely to hit your target and save bullets.

Whilst having an attractive logo, an active Social Media page and loud campaigns can boost your brand’s visibility, they don’t guarantee success, especially if there’s no strategy in the back-end guiding their use. The most important thing when it comes to building your brand is intentionality. A lack of intentionality and consistency in communication creates confusion in the minds of your potential customers, which is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to winning customers and making sales. The human brain is lazy, and with so many visuals, screens and sounds competing for the attention of your audience, you must be distinct, resonant and consistent.

Brand Strategy is a long-term plan for your business that consists of understanding your target audience, articulating your offering and presenting it in a way that your audience feels connected. Putting all these elements together will give your business focus and a much higher chance of attracting the right people who can give your business the rewards you seek. Building your Brand Strategy ensures that no matter the trends, the economic reality, or what product is making waves in the market, your brand is consistently winning.

Understand Your Target Audience
Who are they? What is their lifestyle? What do they need to get done? These three questions are the most critical to answer about your potential customers. Without customers, business does not exist, and understanding them is the secret to creating a product or service that not just thrives, but wins. Do some research, put a focus group together or observe the lifestyle of your audience with a measurable method.

Articulate Your Offering
Why should your customer pay for your product or service? What problem are you solving or how are you making their job easier? It is not enough for you to know that your product has value; you must find a purpose for it in the life of your customer or end user, its value is of us no use.

Connect
This is the part that most people pay attention to, glossing over the first two steps. But to get this right, the questions above must be answered and crystal clear. Once you understand your audience: what is most important to them, where they spend their time, what their biggest difficulties are trying to achieve their goals, what platforms they are on, you have a wealth of information about when, where and how to speak to them. Then present your product/service based on these. Keep it simple, fool-proof and clear.

Brand Strategy is not reserved for the big corporations and organizations. Bloggers, SME owners, freelancers and Startups can have very strong Brand Strategies too. Start to become intentional today and build a brand people want to pay for.
